Dinner, not biscuits

The inclusions list dinner, snacks and light refreshments around a campfire. That is a real differentiator on a chase that can run nine hours: the other listings here offer hot chocolate, sweet snacks or reindeer sausages, and only Chasing Lights also commits to a warm meal.

Reviewers describe the food as rehydrated expedition packs — hot, filling and not a restaurant. One traveller advised eating dinner beforehand if freeze-dried food is not for you, and praised the tomato soup and hot chocolate in the same review. Set your expectations at Arctic field catering and you will not be disappointed.

Transfers in both directions

This is the only chase of the five that includes hotel and port transfers both ways. The meeting point is the main entrance of Scandic Ishavshotel on Fredrik Langes gate 2, and drop-off is at your hotel or apartment on Tromso island.

One caveat is stated on the listing: if you are staying outside Tromso island, the guide will drop you at a bus or taxi stand rather than your door. Worth checking against your accommodation before you assume door-to-door service at two in the morning.

By comparison, Arctic Breeze drops off but does not collect, and the coach expedition does neither.

Non-refundable means non-refundable

What the written reviews agree on is the guiding. Named guides appear again and again: driving into Finland through a snowstorm, waiting an extra hour because the solar activity looked like it was building, photographing every couple individually and sharing the files the next day.

The critical reviews, read honestly

Two complaints recur, and both are worth knowing. The gear one is covered above. The other is about the chase itself: one traveller in November 2024 wrote that their van drove an hour to a single location shared with other groups and a large bus, and that there was no chasing between spots.

That is the risk in any weather-dependent product, and it is worth setting against the reviews describing 240-mile drives into Finland on the same tour. The variable is the night, and to a degree the guide. What you are buying at this price is the smallest group and the best-equipped vehicle in the comparison, not a different sky.
